Fact 1:
Like my heroine Gillian Smith, I was introduced to science and
engineering by my father, at a very young age. When I was only seven, he
taught me how to use a microscope to look at micro-organisms in pond water.
Later, he helped me use his jigsaw to create a 3-D model of DNA for a science
fair.
Fact 2:
My first experience with computer programming was a Saturday
program for high schoolers at MIT. The programming language was FORTRAN,
and we had to punch our own cards to feed to the mainframe. I’m still writing
software today.
Fact 3:
I’ve been to Dover, the setting for The Toymakers Guild, exactly once,
but it made a big impression on me. Our room at the back of the inn had a
fantastic view, looking out upon grazing sheep, a lichen-encrusted stone wall,
and beyond that to the moors.
Fact 4:
I had the pleasure of meeting Kryssie in person a number of years ago
at an erotica authors conference in Scarborough, Yorkshire. That day was one
of the peak experiences in my life. I can’t share my alter-ego with many
people; it was intoxicating to be among my fellow writers and to be recognized
as Lisabet Sarai. (Given my affinity for all things Victorian, I also loved the
nineteenth century echoes in Scarborough.)
Fact 5:
The hardest part of writing The Toymakers Guild was making sure I
used British spellings! I decided I wanted to use British English for authenticity.
However, since the trilogy is self-published, I didn’t have a dedicated editor. I
kept slipping up, using “ize” instead of “ise” or “or” instead of “our”.
