Gore's size made people nervous, but his triad brothers accepted him for who and what he was—a misfit who’d alienated the woman he adored. Hell, apart from them, everyone he’d ever loved had turned on him.
His thoughts took him back to his tenth birthday. Thanks to his berserker heritage, he’d towered over his classmates. He lifted, pushed, and climbed things they couldn’t. Threatened by his muscular bulk, they’d kept their distance.
An older pupil—a bully not known for his brains—had taken a swing at him. Gore had misjudged his strength as he shoved him away. Ashamed to face his parents, he’d taken the long route home. When he trudged up the drive, his father had blocked the doorway. “You’re a disgrace to our name. A freak like you doesn’t belong in our family. Here,” he tossed a rucksack at his son, “take your stuff and go. You don’t live here anymore.”
He’d slammed the door. Gore’s world had become as gray as the clouds overhead, and he’d stood as though frozen. Scared and alone, his father’s rejection stole the air from his lungs. Surely he hadn’t heard right? Then the key turned in the lock and the bolts shot home.
Not knowing what else to do, he’d hoisted his bag over his shoulder and trudged away. With no other relatives and nowhere to go, he’d slept rough for days. Desperate to continue his education and stay warm, he spent as much time as possible in the city library.
